What is the iBooster Braking System?

The iBooster is an electromechanical brake booster, developed by Bosch in Germany. It does not use any vacuum pump. Its main application would be in electric and hybrid vehicles where it provides situation-based support when the driver initiates braking. ibooster brake system increases the efficiency of hybrid and electric cars together with safety increment due to the shortening of braking distance. The advantages, for example, are shorter distances that accruing brakes have to cover, speed response times, adjustable pedal feel, high regenerative efficiency, and better autonomous driving competence.

Electric drive energy must be as high as possible to achieve the range and fuel efficiency ratings for hybrid and electric vehicles. In an ideal situation, deceleration can be achieved fully by the use of the electric motor through conversion of kinetic energy into electrical energy hence eliminating the loss of valuable energy during braking. The ibooster brake system recovers energy lost in nearly all typical braking maneuvers, achieving deceleration of up to 0.3 g using only the electric motor. Therefore, it covers all common braking maneuvers in everyday traffic.

If a harder brake is required, the iBooster generates the required additional brake pressure conventionally via the master cylinder. Bosch says the driver won’t notice this interaction between the electric motor and the brakes, as the pedal feel remains completely normal.

Benefits of the ibooster brake system

Bosch has integrated an electric motor into the iBooster, which controls the degree of brake boost via a two-stage gearbox, providing support tailored to the situation. This eliminates the current expensive and continuous process of generating vacuum directly using the internal combustion engine or a vacuum pump. In addition to saving fuel, it also enables more comprehensive utilization of fuel-saving functions such as start-stop or coasting, which stop the engine for a period of time.

The mechatronic concept offers further advantages. If the predictive emergency braking system detects a dangerous situation, the iBooster can automatically build up maximum brake pressure in approximately 120 milliseconds, three times faster than previous systems. This allows the iBooster to brake the vehicle faster in an emergency than a driver using a conventional braking system.

The iBooster can also take on the functions of an adaptive cruise control (ACC), bringing the vehicle to a stop smoothly and comfortably. This is particularly important for quiet electric vehicles, where ambient noise is more noticeable.
