What are radial brakes? What are the advantages of radial brakes compared to axial brakes?

If you hear people talking about radial brakes, they’re probably referring to radial brake calipers or radial master cylinders. What are radial brakes? They’re gradually replacing traditional brake master cylinders on high-performance motorcycles, and what are the benefits?

What are motorcycle radial brakes?

In 1985 Brembo registered the first patent for an idea destined to revolutionise braking systems: the radial master cylinder. The idea first took shape in racing, where the problem of limited space on competition bikes spurred intense research into more compact solutions.

What set this new solution apart was a configuration that transmitted the force exerted by the rider’s hand to the piston directly and in the same direction, without friction losses caused by diverting the force into multiple components.

The radial design puts the piston axis parallel to the lever pull direction and perpendicular to the handlebar.

As depicted in the preceding diagram, this new concept significantly improved rider ergonomics, making the action of the rider on the brake lever even more effective while reducing the size of the system.

What does a radially mounted brake caliper mean?

The term “radial-mount” refers to how the brake calipers are fixed to the lower fork body. Traditionally, and even currently on lower-spec bikes, calipers were mounted using bolts parallel to the axle. With radial-mount calipers, the mounting bolts are oriented radially to the axle, as the name implies. With conventional mounting, both bolts are at the front of the caliper or the trailing edge in terms of disc rotation. Radial mounting puts a bolt at the front and rear of the caliper, which increases the stiffness of the assembly and reduces how much the caliper twists when the brakes are applied. This, in turn, improves feel at the lever and helps the pads to wear more evenly.

As depicted in the preceding diagram, the direction of the radial braking force coincides with that of the wheel's rotation. The absence of deflection is due to the braking and rotational forces being aligned on the same plane.

The easiest way to understand the difference between axial and radial calipers is to imagine the front wheel of a bicycle as a perfect disc, rotating around a central axis—at least roughly. The central axis defines the "axial" property, while imaginary lines running from one side of the disc through the center point to the other (similar to steel spokes) define the "radial" property.
These two properties refer to the orientation of the bolts used to secure the caliper to the front fork. If the bolts are screwed from side to side, horizontally, and parallel to the ground and the wheel axis, then this is an axial brake. Basically, if the caliper's screws are tightened toward the wheel, we speak of an axial brake.

However, if the bolts are tightened longitudinally, parallel to the direction of travel, the bike's axis, and one of the spokes or radii, then we're talking about a radially mounted caliper.

What are the benefits of a radial master cylinder?

Radial front brake master cylinders guarantee instant and controllable braking power in all conditions, ensuring safety and confidence on the road.

The main advantage of using motorcycle radial calipers is that they reduce flex or lateral torsion and provide better pad-to-disc contact during maximum braking. Street riding doesn't typically require maximum braking, at least not often. Therefore, radial calipers are crucial in racing, where every second you save can make a huge difference.

Course racing is incredibly fast, requiring maximum braking force to ensure proper performance. Both riders and mechanics can tell the difference between radial and axial brakes.

Conclusion

The use of radial brakes marks a major progression in the technology of motorcycle braking. With the escalating need for advanced braking systems, grasping the advantages of radial brakes becomes crucial for distributors, wholesalers, and riders.
