What is a motorcycle rear brake light switch?
A typical motorcycle rear brake pump switch cable controls the operation of the rear brake system and signals the vehicle to brake. Its specific function is to close the circuit, illuminate the rear brake light, and (on some models) execute other electronic control functions when the rear brake pedal or lever is depressed. The following picture shows the rear brake light switch cable pattern for our custom motorcycle disc brake assembly. It can be used as a reference.

What are the functions of a rear brake light switch?
Illuminating the rear brake light: This is the primary function. When the rear brake pump switch is triggered, current is supplied to the brake light, illuminating it and alerting vehicles behind you that you are braking. Performing Other Functions (Select Models): On some modern motorcycles, the rear brake switch cable may also connect to other electronic control units (ECUs), such as the engine control system; traction control system (TCS); and anti-lock braking system (ABS).
Location of the Rear Brake Light Switch Cable
Typically, the rear brake pump switch cable is located near the rear brake pedal or lever. As can be seen in the image of our motorcycle’s brake switch cable, the rear brake light switch cable is located on the rear brake lever and connected to the master cylinder.
Rear Brake Light Switch Cable Inspection and Repair
If you suddenly find that the rear brake light doesn’t illuminate when you press the rear brake pump, it’s likely a problem with the brake switch cable. There are many possible issues, such as a loose connection, a broken connection, or a defective switch body. In this case, you’ll need to disassemble and inspect the cable with tools.
Regularly, you should inspect the brake switch cable to ensure it’s securely connected and the switch itself is free of damage.
Custom Rear Brake Light Switch Cable Requirements
Hipsen can upgrade custom brake components for you, such as custom motorcycle disc brake assemblies and brake light switch cables. Disc brake assemblies require information such as the caliper‘s mounting size and diameter, the handbrake pump‘s mounting size and diameter (master cylinder with piston), brake line length, thread size of the bleeding hole, vehicle weight, and maximum speed per hour.
